Computing
& why is it important?

Climate
change, soaring energy
prices & now the credit
crunch
mean that the economic
landscape is rapidly
shifting under our feet.
New ways of doing
business are emerging;
companies have to be
more efficient, more
dynamic & more
interconnected than ever
before. IT is central to
the modern world.
However, it is
increasingly coming
under the spotlight. In
the UK there are an
estimated 10 million
office PCs. IT equipment
accounts for 10% of the
UK's electricity
consumption but it is so
central to our economy
that it could help
reduce total national
emissions by more than
20% by enabling more
profound changes to
business operations. IT
is responsible for the
same CO2 emissions as
the aviation sector
globally & is growing at
a faster rate. So far,
IT has avoided the kind
of criticism directed at
the aviation industry
but this is likely to
change. Especially
because the IT sector
has huge potential for
easy gains in resource
efficiency (compared to
inherently dirty sectors
like mining or
aviation).
Looking
into ways of increasing
the energy efficiency of
the traditional desktop
PC our realisation was
that for the vast
majority of applications
a computer generally
operates on less than
10% of its available
processing power. This
is a very wasteful
resource and it would be
extremely beneficial if
more than one user could
share a PC's processing
power - hence
Multiseat Computing.
 
Performance is improved as
SoftXpand

capabilities of the GPU
and CPU acting like a
traffic policeman; this
was recognised by PC
Plus who tested
SoftXpand
against VMWare and
Microsoft’s products and
we came out on top.

Multiseat
Computing is the process
of enabling multiple
concurrent users to
share the resources of
one computer
simultaneously through
the use of proprietary
software
SoftXpand,
with no performance
degradation.
To put it
simply you
log into a PC or Laptop
at home with your own
username & password &
see your own
background, your own
programmes etc. You log
out, and someone else in
your household logs in
to the same PC or Laptop
using their own username
& password & sees
their own
background, programmes
etc. Although you can
both log in
independently, you
cannot log in at the
same time.
SoftXpand
allows this to happen by
effectively 'unlocking'
the Operating System to
allow multiple users to
log in to their own
profiles at the same
time.
